SCORE for 2010

About the SCORE for 2010 campaign

Sf2010_factSheetHeader_300SCORE was well positioned to make a significant contribution towards the social development impact of the 2010 FIFA World Cup™ in South Africa. With this in mind, SCORE developed the SCORE for 2010 campaign that aimed to share the excitement of the global event with ordinary South Africans in the rural and disadvantaged communities in which SCORE operates.

The vast majority of South Africans could not afford FIFA World Cup™ tickets or travel to the stadiums and as a consequence had a limited opportunity to experience the electrifying atmosphere generated by hosting football fans from around the world in our host cities and fan parks. SCORE felt that the responsibility to deliver the social development opportunities created by the FIFA World Cup™ should be shared by all stakeholders in the Sport and Development sector.

The SCORE for 2010 campaign was built on the organisation’s prior investment in developing the capacity of community sports leaders and will continue long after the final whistle of the 2010 FIFA World Cup™. The campaign forms part of the organisation’s long-term programme plan, to build a platform for future work and contribute to a real and visible legacy at grassroots level.

The foundation of the SCORE for 2010 campaign was SCORE’s unique holiday program, the SCORE Cup. This community-based football competition involved over 8500 children and youth in more than 45 communities throughout Southern Africa during the 2010 FIFA World Cup™.

How can I be involved?

Sf2010_MtFletcherEverybody talks about the opportunities that will arise from the 2010 FIFA World Cup™ coming to South Africa. The SCORE for 2010 campaign aims to turns these opportunities into areality that will make a significant difference in the lives of young soccer players and fans across the country and beyond its borders. You can join us in making the SCORE Cup an extraordinary event!

There are three ways in which you can be involved:

1. Sponsor a SCORE Cup
SCORE invites donors and corporates to fund the implementation of the SCORECup in one or more of the participating communities.  This sponsorship will upgrade the event in the sponsored community whilst providing unique opportunities for Corporate Responsibility initiatives linked to the 2010 FIFA World Cup™.

Find out more on the Sponsor a SCORE Cup page .

2. Visit a SCORE Cup
SCORE has received numerous requests from partner organisations to conduct Sport and Development themed community visits during the FIFA World Cup™.  These visits will be hosted by a SCORE staff member and Community Sports Leader and will provide insights into the unique challenges and benefits of using sport as a tool for social development.

3. Play the SCORE Cup!
Many of the football fans visiting South Africa during the 2010 FIFA World Cup™ will be interested in Africa's football culture.  SCORE provides these energetic fans the opportunity to play with and against community teams in an exhibition match between representatives of the two nations competing in an upcoming FIFA World Cup™ match.  These matches will take place in a community close to the World Cup host city just prior to one of the World Cup matches the fans will be traveling to watch.

Sustainability and legacy building

The SCORE for 2010 campaign will not only run for the duration of the World Cup™. but will continue long after the final whistle of the 2010 FIFA World Cup™ has sounded. This campaign forms part of the organisation’s long-term programme plan, building a platform for future work and contributing to a real and visible legacy at grassroots level.

SCORE has been a significant player in the Sport and Development sector since 1991 and will continue to do so for many years to come. SCORE therefore believes that the SCORE for 2010 activities must fit in with the organisation’s long-term strategy by building on existing outcomes and strengthening the foundation for future programmes. SCORE will be able to leave a sustainable legacy for our communities, stakeholders and partners.

Launch of the SCORE for 2010 Campaign

This video covers the launch of the SCORE for 2010 Campaign through which SCORE aims to share the excitement of the 2010 FIFA World Cup™ with young people in rural villages and urban townships in South Africa, Namibia and Zambia. The video includes the official kick-off of the campaign by Mr Thabo Tutu, Director of Sport and Recreation in the Western Cape Province, as well as the inaugural Community Cup tournament held at Isiphiwo Primary School, Khayelitsha, Cape Town on the 30th March 2010.

Using NING, an online social networking platform to connect SCORE communities to the world!

Sf2010_ningScreenShot_300Through the innovative use of the NING social networking platform, SCORE is able to facilitate direct interaction between community participants and the sponsors of the SCORE Cup in their community.  SCORE has published NING pages detailing the SCORE Cup, including an overall daily highlights page, as well as set up NING pages for each community participating in the SCORE Cup.

Community participants are being trained to upload blog posts containing the days match scores as well as photo and video content to their community page.  In this way they will be able to provide regular feedback to the sponsor of the community cup in their community.  It is hoped that the interest generated by such engaging and direct feedback from the teams and participants in the sponsored community will engage the employees of the corporate sponsors and initiate a lively online dialogue and a sharing of the excitement of the World Cup.
