The SCORE Cup

The SCORE Cup - for the people by the people!

Sf2010_brazilPaintingDuring the 2010 FIFA World Cup™, all South African schools will be closed for a period of five weeks. In order to provide structured activities for children and youth during this period, SCORE will support local youth leaders to run the SCORE Cup in the communities where the organisation operates.

Designed in consultation with these community sports leaders, the SCORE Cup sees 32 mixed teams (boys and girls) drawn to represent one of the 2010 FIFA World Cup™ nations. In all participating communities, these 32 teams will mirror the daily match schedule of the 2010 FIFA World Cup™ for the group phase, leading up towards the Final Tournament of the SCORE Cup on the 26th of June, 2010. In addition to competing on the field, teams also participate in simultaneous sports for development educational activities highlighting subjects such as HIV/AIDS awareness, global citizenship, fair play, community service, and life and leadership skills.

SCORE believes the SCORECup will create an exciting link with activities taking place during the 2010 FIFA World Cup™. As local coach Mandla said when this idea was being conceptualised in a meeting of community sports leaders: Imagine, if South Africa beats France 3-0 in the Khyayelitsha SCORE Cup, what interest there will be in the official match!”

How can I be involved?

Sf2010_MtFletcherEverybody talks about the opportunities that will arise from the 2010 FIFA World Cup™ coming to South Africa. The SCORE for 2010 campaign aims to turns these opportunities into areality that will make a significant difference in the lives of young soccer players and fans across the country and beyond its borders. You can join us in making the SCORE Cup an extraordinary event!

There are three ways in which you can be involved:

1. Sponsor a SCORE Cup
SCORE invites donors and corporates to fund the implementation of the SCORECup in one or more of the participating communities.  This sponsorship will upgrade the event in the sponsored community whilst providing unique opportunities for Corporate Responsibility initiatives linked to the 2010 FIFA World Cup™.

Find out more on the Sponsor a SCORE Cup page .

2. Visit a SCORE Cup
SCORE has received numerous requests from partner organisations to conduct Sport and Development themed community visits during the FIFA World Cup™.  These visits will be hosted by a SCORE staff member and Community Sports Leader and will provide insights into the unique challenges and benefits of using sport as a tool for social development.

3. Play the SCORE Cup!
Many of the football fans visiting South Africa during the 2010 FIFA World Cup™ will be interested in Africa's football culture.  SCORE provides these energetic fans the opportunity to play with and against community teams in an exhibition match between representatives of the two nations competing in an upcoming FIFA World Cup™ match.  These matches will take place in a community close to the World Cup host city just prior to one of the World Cup matches the fans will be traveling to watch.
