Big upset at Cup of Heroes !, 17 OCTOBER 2008
b

A
Last minute entry, Oshakati from Namibia, walked away with the Cup!
The National Cup of Heroes was held in Pretoria from Friday the 26 October to Sunday the 28 September 2008.Most of the teams started traveling a day before from their communities except the Oshakati team from Namibia that left 2days before to be on time for the start of the event. The 10 community teams that comprised of 24 people stayed in a venue called “the castle”while games were played at the Pretoria University and the finals took place at the massive Loftus stadium.

Cup of Heroes is an occasion to harness the power of the community through sport. The event is for teams to score points both on and off the field. It showcased the use of sport as a driver and tool to achieve social transformation and personal empowerment, focusing on community youth supported by mentors, coaches and parents.

The winning team, Oshakati from Namibia enjoyed their first travel to see South Africa and to meet young people from other communities. As they spoke at the welcome parade, hosted by former SA goal keeper, SCORE’s ambassador Hans Vonk, they said they come from the land of the brave and they demonstrated to all what that meant over the next days.

The team did extremely well in the tournament and represented Namibia well against the South African community teams. Their cultural presentation and community service project really impressed the judges and other teams. They won the soccer category and fairplay award and were second in the mixed soccer category.

Libode and Sterkspruit, both from the Eastern Cape Province were 2nd and 3rd.
Interestingly the 2010 partner country project was won by Dysselsdorp(Western Cape province)who had thoroughly researched Germany and even sang Germany’s national Anthem.

Everyone at the event was very impressed with the Oshakati team, As winners of the Cup of Heroes, the team received the Cup, adidas balls and kit, and also a week Environmental education and Leadership Camp for the whole team in Cape Town in January 2009.

SCORE would like to sincerely thank adidas, Norwegian Olympic committee and Confederation of Sport and Sport & Recreation South Africa for the funds, support and the opportunity given to bring all the teams to the successful Cup of Heroes.

Becoming a SCORE VOLUNTEER can be one of the most rewarding experiences of your life.
"My experience as a SCORE volunteer has changed me forever. I have a new understanding of the daily challenges facing millions of people around the world in developing countries. I have the greatest respect for people who achieve enormous things with very little help or resources. I have become accepted and integrated into a culture that on the surface appears so different from my own, but on examination from the inside out, appears so similar. I have taken my theoretical education to the limits of ingenuity in a very challenging environment and I have left behind a foundation for others to continue building on. I have made many special friends. It is very hard for me to say good bye." ~ SCORE volunteer 2002.

SCORE is most grateful to all its FUNDERS over the years. Without their continued financial and moral support SCORE would not be in the favourable position it finds itself today. Our capacity to meet the enormous needs of the communities and countries in which we work is limited by the magnitude of financial support we receive. If you are in a position to support the valuable work that SCORE does please contact Stefan Howells.
