Community Service
Cup of Heroes - Service
The community service component creates an opportunity for youth to contribute back to their community. The team should be involved in a community service project that makes a difference in their community, that raises awareness about issues in their community and to instill a sense of responsibility within the youth. Teams must display evidence of their project in the exhibition room and explain to the judges what they have done.

"Working together as a community not only makes things a whole lot better but it also changes a lot of people’s lives. We couldn’t possibly have achieved anything in community service if it weren’t for the diversity and the hardwork that everyone has put in. And doing this was really worth every minute spent doing it. The community service project has been my most memorable part of Cup of Heroes. Working with community centres and getting involved in everything has changed my perspective and realized how important it is to do this, most especially if it involves the whole community at large. Whoever knew that one day I would volunteer at a community centre? Doing these kinds of projects has inspired me to work hard and strive for better things to improve my community. I had never imagined that I’d one day work with orphans and disabled children, but I am today doing it and happy to be doing it. All these wouldn’t have been possible if I hadn’t got involved in Cup of Heroes. Doing this has made me change for a better, compassionate, loving and caring person. And I enjoy every single minute and second that I spend with those kids. Listening to other communities talking about what they do in their communities truly makes one think of how lucky we are to have youths and other leaders that volunteer their time to make lives better for other people."

"Cup of Heroes 2010 has been a long journey. During this journey I had lots of fun and got to experience lots of things. I enjoyed all the practices and proudly attended most of them, but there was one practice which I couldn't stand and that was COMMUNITY SERVICE. Our coach would tell us that community service starts at 11:00 until 14:00. Can you imagine working the whole 5 hours in the hot sun! Worst of all chopping down thorn trees! I don't regret it because it helped the school learners because without my help they dont have to walk in the bushes on their way to school. We had to plant our own garden, eish that was quite a job, but eventually we took care of it and the seeds have grown into beautiful, fresh, tender vegetables." Keamoge Tswemashiane

"It is important to be involved in your community, through sport and volunteering. Through Cup of Heroes, I am exposed to more of the community I live, and I want to help. When I see people suffering, I am also suffering… I will definitely continue! It is important to be involved in your community, whether through sports or volunteering." Lorrise Kotlolo Hillbrow |
