SCORE Cup of Heros – Ten teams of 45 young men and women each compete in soccer, netball and edutainment events.

SCORE recently organised a successful Cup of Heroes in East London at Jan Smuts Grounds. The event took place from 26-28th October 2007. The Cup of Heroes is an occasion to harness the power of the community through sport, particularly football and netball. The event showcased the use of sport as a driver and tool to achieve social transformation and personal empowerment, focusing on community youth.

There were teams from 10 South African communities participating in this inaugural Cup of Heroes:
GaRadingwana (Limpopo), Hoyi (Mpumalanga), Khayelitsha (Western Cape), Mount Fletcher (Eastern Cape), Mohodi (Limpopo), Nqamakwe (Eastern Cape), Schoemansdal (Mpumalanga), Sterkspruit (Eastern Cape), Thomo (Limpopo) and Tiyani (Limopopo).

These teams comprising 45 people each competed in cultural events, ‘edutainment’ presentations and mixed 5-a-side football and mixed 7-a-side netball tournaments over the 2 days. The mixed gender teams promoted an increase in the number of girls involved in sport and increased awareness of gender issues, and in the edutainment competition most of the messages were related to HIV/AIDS and one was addressing abuse in the families.

Because Cup of Heroes is a tournament for teams to score points both on and off the field, all the community teams demonstrated a lot of courage and talent in all activities as they were aware that they were judged on a variety of activities including Fair Play. Cup of Heroes was driven by the youth from the communities supported by mentors, coaches and parents.

The Cup of Heroes trophy was won by Mohodi community from Limpopo and they also won a leadership outdoor education camp for all 45 members of the team in Wellington,Western Cape. The Soccer U14 was won by a Sterkspruit community from the Eastern Cape. The U16 category was won by Mohodi community. Netball U14 was won by Ngqamakwe community from the Eastern Cape, U16 netball was jointly won by Schoemansdal from Mpumalanga and Khayelitsha from the Western Cape.
The Fair Play award was won by Mohodi for Netball and Tiyani community from Limpopo for soccer.

The Chief Director Mr Thembinkosi Biyela & Ms Noma Kotelo from the Sports and Recreation South Africa and the Director of the provincial department of Sports Recreation, Arts and Culture, Mr B.D.Makubalo were present at the event. They have also supported SCORE to make this event a success. Other partners that supported us with funds for the event are Nike SA & Norwegian Olympic committee and Confederation of Sport.
